Tasting notes for the Bowmore 18 YO - Single Malt Scotch Whisky

  • EYE: The Bowmore 18 Years reveals a deep amber hue, reminiscent of polished copper, with golden reflections dancing in the glass. Its radiant brilliance invites a promising sensory exploration.
  • NOSE: The first inhalations unveil a rich and complex bouquet. Peaty notes, characteristic of Islay, intertwine with delicate aromas of dried fruits, such as figs and apricots. Wafts of maritime smoke interlace with sweet accents of honey, creating a fascinating olfactory symphony.
  • MOUTH: The peat expresses itself with elegance, accompanied by flavors of smoked oak and dark chocolate. Touches of creamy vanilla soften the power of the peat, offering a balanced harmony. The silky texture caresses the palate, giving way to a lingering finish.

In short: This Bowmore 18 Years is a sensory masterpiece, skillfully marrying the robustness of peat with the sweetness of fruits and sugary notes. Its complex and balanced character makes it an exquisite choice for enthusiasts of mature and refined whiskies. This whisky pairs well with various appetizers, such as smoked salmon to complement its peaty notes, aged blue cheese, or even a platter of dried fruits.

The Art of Time and Whisky

The Bowmore distillery, located in the eponymous village, is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Located on the shores of Loch Indal on the Isle of Islay, Bowmore has been producing exceptional whiskeys for 240 years.

Founded in 1779, Bowmore Distillery is the very first in Islay to obtain a spirits manufacturing license, and the second one in Scotland. It was with its acquisition by the brothers James and William Mutter that fame grew. The brothers had a canal built that diverted the Lagan River, whose excellent quality water would allow the distillation of low-peat but powerful single malts.

The distillery went through several crises and takeovers, and was even used by the Allies as an air base during World War II. The Bowmore spirit is a blend of stability, longevity and a tradition that is not afraid to evolve. "The art of time" is the motto of the house, demonstrated through delicate whiskies, both subtle and precise. A balance achieved thanks to the waters of Lagan and Loch Indal (a slightly saline lake). An art of time and precision.
