The Aristocracy of Whiskies
Founded in 1821 by Peter Brown, Linkwood Distillery is located on the edge of the town of Elgin, in the Moray region of Speyside. Production began three years later. The distillery experienced several successive expansions and remained in the Brown family until 1933, when it was taken over by Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. Production was interrupted during the war.
The distillery is very popular with master blenders, which explains why here's so few official bottling. In fact, only 2% of the production is sold directly in the form of single malt whisky, all the rest is either sold to merchants or for the vast majority used for the manufacture of blends. Linkwood is used in the production of Bell, Whitehorse, Dimple, Johnnie Walker or Haig.
Linkwood is considered by connoisseurs to be the aristocracy of distilleries, as its spirits can age gracefully and work brilliantly with all types of barrels. We thus find variations of Linkwood whiskey in the catalogs of independent houses such as Duncan Taylor, Cadenhead or Hart Brothers.
