The tradition of whisky
The story began in 1871 with the closing of the Tonicheal distillery. Alexander Wilson, nephew of the owner, decided to move the stills and the barrels of Tonicheal and to build a new distillery, called Inchgower, in the town of Buckie. Inchgower was active until 1903, before suspending its production. It was the town of Buckie that reopened the distillery in 1930.
Inchgower was then considered to be the perfect spirits distillery: it had its own carpenters on-site, as well as blacksmiths making barrels, vats and stills. Plus, the worker houses were also located at the entrance of the property. The distillery was bought in 1936 by Arthur Bell & Sons who in 1960 modernized the equipment, thus doubling the production capacity, before being sold to Guinness in 1985.
Most of the production goes into the development of blends. Thus, 99% of the whiskey is found in Johnnie Walker, White Horse and Bell's blends. The rest is bottled as a single malt and offers light, slightly peaty flavors with a bit of tang and citrus.
