Tasting notes for the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 1993 - Domaine Robert Groffier

  • EYE: This 1993 grand cru is visually striking, with its brilliant ruby red hue, like a testament to its evolution over the years. The color, though slightly brick-toned at the edges, retains remarkable vibrancy and has a beautiful presence in the glass.
  • NOSE: A complex and evolved aromatic palette emanates from this Pinot Noir. Notes of stewed red fruits intertwine with aromas of undergrowth, leather, and tobacco. Upon aeration, subtle hints of truffle emerge, adding an earthy and truffle-infused dimension to the ensemble.
  • MOUTH: The structure is elegant with melted tannins that gently caress the palate. The tasting reveals a beautiful freshness, supported by well-integrated acidity. Flavors of black cherries, licorice, and spicy notes persist, creating a gustatory harmony that evokes the finesse and complexity of the Bonnes-Mares climat.

In short: The 1993 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Domaine Robert Groffier offers an incredibly rich sensory experience. Its brilliant hue attests to a harmonious evolution. On the nose, the complexity of aromas reflects the development of a great wine. In the mouth, the balance between freshness and structure reveals the nobility of this Pinot Noir. This vintage can still age gracefully for 5 to 10 years, maintaining its elegance and complexity. It pairs perfectly with game dishes such as roast venison with lingonberries, grilled ribeye, sautéed mushrooms, a selection of aged cheeses, or even duck confit with mild spices.

Family vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny

As a former professional cyclist, Jules Groffier was very familiar with France. During the 1950s, he decided to dedicate his life to his other passion: winemaking. He left his bike to go work on his family's Burgundian estate, founded by his father Frédéric in the little village of Morey-Saint-Denis. There, he would take care of vines planted during the 1930s, until his death in 1974. After his passing, his son Robert took the helm of the estate.

Robert Groffier has a deep respect for the terroir and the family traditions. He takes extremely good care of the 8 hectares of vineyard he inherited, growing in Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny (this latter parcel produces the famous First Growth "Les Amoureuses"). His life ambition? To create the kinds of wines that can really express the power of the grapes, instead of the effect of the winemaking process itself.

In 2005, Robert left the reins of the family estate to his son Nicolas. He represents the fourth generation of Groffier, as attached to nature and family values as his ancestors. Together, father and son are now among the very best winemakers of the Côte de Nuits, thanks to their fine and smooth wines. Acclaimed by connoisseurs, their wines can age gracefully and will reveal themselves after a dozen years of cellaring.
