Morey-Saint-Denis winemakers since 1968
The Domaine Dujac is a bit of an oddity in the little world of Burgundy wine. Its story began in 1966, the year Jacques Seysses (the future cofounder of the Domaine de Triennes) decided to stop working for the family business and started to focus on winemaking. Until then, Jacques had been employed by his father and destined to take his place in the long run, but he wanted to leave it all behind and make his own wine. His father was none other than Louis Seysses, the CEO of the famous biscuit brand Belin.
His dad, who was also an amateur of fine wine and fine food, suggested he should train at the Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, an estate he founded in 1964 in Volnay (Burgundy region). There, Jacques Seysses collaborated with Gérard Potel (the father of Nicolas Potel). Two years later, Jacques Seysses bought the Domaine Graillet from Morey-Saint-Denis, in the Côte de Nuits, with its 4.5 hectares of vineyard. He turned it into his very own estate that he called the "Domaine Dujac". The name "Dujac" chosen by Jacques Seysses comes from the expression "le domaine du Jacques", which basically means "Jacques' estate".
Jacques toiled night and day in his vineyard and his work ethics quickly started to impress his pairs. They thought the young man had tremendous potential. When the Domaine Dujac released its first cuvée in 1971 (a 1969 vintage), their suspicions turned out to be right. It was an immediate commercial success. In 1973, Jacques Seysses married Rosalind and they had two sons, Jeremy and Alec Seysses. The two boys started working at the family estate in 1998 and 2003 and ended up becoming its new managers. Today, Jeremy and Alec make wine like their ancestors used to do, without much interventionism in the cellar, but of course they don't forget to innovate. Since 2008, the now 15.5 hectares of vineyards that belong to the Domaine Dujac are even 100% organic certified.
