Description
  • Presentation of the winery

Château Haut-Brion is the ancestor of grand cru. The story begins in 1525, when Jean de Pontac, officer of the Bordeaux Parliament, acquired Haut-Brion. Jean de Pontac and his descendants succeeded in producing a new type of wine, well known in England under the name of “New French Claret”. This wine met a great success. After the revolution the estate passed from hand to hand, to arrive in 1935 in the hands of Clarence Dillon, an American financial, wine lover. The castle is still in the family, it is now run by his grandson, the Prince Robert of Luxembourg. The vineyard covers an area of 48 ha, is located on the outskirts of the city of Bordeaux. The vineyard is planted on gravelly soils with clay subsoil. The vineyard is composed of 42 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 42 % Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. A small area of less than 3 ha is planted to 52% in Semillon, 47% in Sauvignon and in 1% Petit Verdot.

  •  Wine

Château Haut-Brion 2009 has a red, purple color. The nose of this wine is deep, warm and very mature. We discover aromas of plum, blueberry, with floral notes, but also a hint of cigar, characteristic of the soil. On the palate, the wine has a beautiful concentration and it is smooth. Château Haut-Brion 2009 is one of the finest wines produced by the winery. This wine will certainly age as well as the 1959 vintage from the same field. Maturation may therefore go up to 50 or 75 years.
