A Well-kept Secret from the Loire Valley
Nestled in Montreuil-Bellay, just a few kilometers from Saumur, the Domaine de La Porte Saint Jean stands out as a true little gem, with a reputation that extends beyond French borders. Led by the talented winemaker Sylvain Dittière, son-in-law of the late Charly Foucault (one of the founders of the world-renowned Clos Rougeard), and his wife Pauline Foucault, the small 8-hectare estate embodies the perfect combination of dynamism, extreme precision, and profound respect for the terroir.
Sylvain, trained by the best (having worked at Domaine de l'Écu, Domaine Gauby, and Domaine des Roches Neuves), founded his estate in 2011. Opting for a biodynamic approach without official certification, the estate produces pure and expressive wines. Sylvain pays special attention to long barrel aging, minimal sulfur use, and the complete absence of additives. The troglodyte cave where he has set up his wine cellar shelters red and white cuvées that possess formidable precision, silky tannins, natural energy, and exemplary balance.
The Domaine de La Porte Saint Jean distinguishes itself through its autonomous approach, the refusal of excessive expansion, and the commitment to maintaining moderate yields, reflecting its dedication to quality. Through his work and the quality of his wines, Sylvain is recognized as one of the best winemakers in the Loire Valley and a worthy heir to the Clos Rougeard. His exceptional journey and philosophy focused on the respect for the grapevines, soil, and winemaking traditions shine through in each of his cuvées. Wine enthusiasts should keep a close eye on him.
