Tasting notes for the Champagne Extra Brut "Terre" 1er Cru Cumières 2008 - Geoffroy

  • EYE: The champagne shows a bright golden color, with green highlights. The bubbles are small and refined, with a nice and thick foam.
  • NOSE: Very expressive, with white fruits aromas (apple, peach, pear), and a hint of lemon and orange. On top of the fruits, you can also clearly smell some jasmin and linden here, as well as pastries and roasted hazelnuts.
  • MOUTH: The Champagne Extra Brut Terre 1er Cru Cumières 2008 from the Maison Geoffroy is fresh and lively, with a balanced acidity and creamy texture. The taste of fruit will linger in your mouth, with flavors like apple, pear and peach and additional touches of citrus and hazelnut. The finish is long and persistant, ending on a mineral and flint-like taste.

In short: A prestige champagne that can be experienced alone or accompanied by shellfish, such as oysters or prawns. You could also pair ir with more delicate fish, like smoked salmon or tuna tartar. Discover the richness and complexity of this champagne, made with respect for the Champagne terroir and its traditions.

A family of winemakers from Aÿ

The story of the Maison Geoffroy begins in the 17th century, when the family settled in the village of Cumières, in the famous Marne Valley of the Champagne region. The grapevines that were planted back then stayed in the family. During the early 1950's, Roger Geoffroy was the very first member of the Geoffroy family who decided to put his own champagne in bottles instead of simply selling his grapes to local wine merchants. He thus officially became what we call a "Récoltant-Manipulant" (a winegrower that's also a winemaker) and his eponymous brand came to life.

With the help of his son René Geoffroy, Roger dedicated his entire life to his champagnes, from the vineyard to the cellar. When he died, René inherited the new family business. He and his wife Bernadette bought new grapevines and started to work on the Geoffroy brand. Soon, their son Jean-Baptiste joined the couple in the 1980's, once his winemaking studies were over. He worked alongside his dad who trained him and ended up becoming the new owner. In 2008, Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy chose to move the entire estate to the little town of Aÿ.

Now in charge of the Maison Geoffroy, Jean-Baptiste can count on his 5 daughters to come lend a hand in the future. Right now, though, he still works with his father René. Father and son take care of the 14 hectares of vineyard (which represents 35 parcels in total, located in Cumières, Fleury-la-Rivière, Hautvillers and Damery) according to their own vision of winemaking: maintaining the harmony between nature and man, and protecting the environment. This is the reason why they decided to find organic solutions to improve integrated pest management, such as banning all kinds of chemicals, prioritizing natural fertilizers, tilling the soil manually, or letting grass grow freely in the vineyard.
