French and Swiss biodynamic wines
Caroline Frey is one of the biggest female winemakers on the planet. Born in a wealthy family (her father is the famous real estate mogul Jean-Jacques Frey), Caroline is not really the princess type. She very much prefers working in her vineyards instead of attending fancy high-society dinner parties. In 2000, when her father bought the Château La Lagune wine estate in Bordeaux, he hired his daughter to manage the entire property. She was only 24 years old at the time. Thanks to her hard work, she excelled at her new job, resurrecting a wine estate that had been slowly withering away. Her motto is to let the terroir express itself, without too much human intervention.
Driven by her strong beliefs, Caroline switched the entire La Lagune vineyard to organic and biodynamic agriculture. She did the same for her other properties: the Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné (an estate located in the Rhône Valley and bought by the Compagnie Financière Frey in 2006) and the Château de Corton-André (a little Burgundy gem acquired in 2014). Caroline also owns a tiny vineyard in Switzerland, in the Valais region. In this very intimate garden of less than 1 hectare, the young woman does everything, from vine growing to wine making. The grape varieties she works with are the Petite Arvine, the Chasselas and the Johannisberg.
