Biodynamic wines from the Loire region

In 1934, Clément Manguin, Romain Guiberteau's grandfather, created his very own wine estate in the little village of Saint-Just-sur-Dive, not too far from Saumur (in the famous Loire Valley). From the start the 14 hectares of vineyard were treated with the utmost respect, as Clément was very keen on protecting nature. In a way, his philosophy was a sort of prototype of the current organic agriculture norms. The winemaker worked in his vineyard for 5 years before he had to leave it, due to the Second World War.

His son-in-law, Robert Guiberteau, came to help Clément resurrect the estate in the 1950's. In 1954, Robert bought a few additional hectares of grapevines (among which was the sublime Clos des Carmes, one of the best terroirs around) in order to expand the original vineyard. After about 20 years of working in his estate, Robert retired in 1976. Unfortunately, none of his children wanted to take over the business. Thus, the 12 hectares of vineyard were leased to other winemakers. In 1996, the situation changed, as Robert's son, Romain Guiberteau, dropped out of law school and became a winemaker, like his father and grandfather before him.

Mentored by one of the famous Foucault Brothers, Nady (the nickname given to Bernard Foucault), who were pioneers when it comes to organic agriculture (they started their transition to organic winemaking in the 1970's), Romain produced 5,000 bottles of red wine. Seeing the success of this very high-quality cuvée, the young winemaker immediately chose to go fully organic. In 2003, the Domaine Guiberteau asked for an official AB certification, which it received in 2007. Today, Romain Guiberteau, is one of the most iconic winemakers on the international wine scene, because of his talent and the quality of the terroirs he's working with.
