Tasting notes for the Volnay 2020 - Domaine Chantal Lescure

  • EYE: The robe of Volnay 2020, with its deep ruby hue, evokes youth and vitality. Bright reflections suggest a beautiful concentration.
  • NOSE: At first scent, delicate aromas of black cherry and raspberry express themselves with finesse, revealing the typical characteristics of the Pinot Noir grape. Floral notes of violet and subtle spicy nuances complete this complex aromatic bouquet.
  • MOUTH: On the palate, Volnay unveils a silky and elegant texture. The tannins, present but delicate, contribute to a well-balanced structure. Ripe cherry persists, accompanied by subtle hints of undergrowth and slightly spicy notes. The finish, of beautiful length, leaves a mark of freshness.

In short: This Volnay from the Domaine Chantal Lescure embodies the very essence of the Burgundian terroir. Its intense ruby robe introduces a complex nose of red fruits and floral nuances, while the silky palate reveals harmony between delicate tannins and persistent freshness. A balanced wine, both expressive and refined. You can open it right now, although this Volnay 2020 can further unfold over the next 5 to 8 years, revealing its full maturity. Pair it with a grilled beef fillet, veal chop with morel mushrooms, or a selection of fine cheeses.

Fine wine from Nuits-Saint-Georges

The Domaine Chantal Lescure is one of the most recent wine estates in Burgundy, as it opened its doors in 1975, in the commune of Nuits-Saint-Georges (located to the north of Meursault). Despite its young age, the estate quickly became famous for the quality of its wines. The 18 hectares of vineyard managed by Chantal and her husband Xavier Machard de Gramont are nestled between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. There are 35 parcels and around 20 different appellations in the vineyard, such as Chambolle-Musigny and Volnay.

When Chantal died, in 1996, her two sons Aymeric and Thibault took the helm of the family estate. They immediately thought about the way they were doing things, to define whether the vinification and winegrowing methods were the right ones. As a result, the Machard de Gramont brothers decided in 1997 to try a more organic approach. Since September 2009, all the wines produced by the Domaine Chantal Lescure are now AB certified.

The soils of the vineyard are a blend of clay, silt, pebbles and limestone. Here, grape harvesting is done entirely by hand and the winemaking process is deliberately non-interventionist. This in turn ensures that the red and white wines made by the two brothers can transmit all the specificities of the incredible Nuits-Saint-Georges terroir, in a never ending quest for purity and authenticity.
