Vintage Rum
The "Vieux Rhum de la Martinique" is one of the many molasses rum brands that were mass imported by French spirits merchants during the mid 19th century. The Martinique Rum had been sold in France since the late 17th century, but a decree signed by Emperor Napoleon III completely removed the customs fees that applied to alcohol imports. Hence, its popularity exploded. In the early 20th century, Martinique became the number one rum importer in the world. The labels of this specific brand (bottled in 1841, according to the illustrations) were designed by "J. Latapie, Imprimerie Lithographique", a French printing company based in Toulouse, possibly around 1882.
