The riches of the Vosne-Romanée terroir
The wine estate belonging to the Clavelier family has existed since the late 18th century. The current vineyard, located in Vosne-Romanée (on the Burgundian Côte de Nuits), has been entirely replanted during the 1930's because of the phylloxera invasion (a parasitic insect brought from America) that plagued the country at the time. Bruno Clavelier's grandfather, Joseph Brosson, was managing the estate back then, since 1935. Bruno's other grandfather, Antoine Clavelier, was on the opposite side: he was in charge of a trading house, located in Comblanchien (not far from the city of Beaune). Antoine was actually one of the many people that bought grapes from Joseph. His three sons, André (Bruno's future dad), Jean and Gérard Clavelier, inherited the business in 1978 and managed it until 1991. That year, they decided to sell the family house.
Enter Bruno. In 1987, he put aside his successful rugby player career and followed in André's footsteps by becoming a winemaker. He decided to take the helm of his grandad's estate, with the precious help of both Joseph and André. As soon as 1992, the young man chose to bottle his own wine directly at the estate, so he would not be as dependent on local trading houses as his grandparents were. Four years later, the three men asked for an organic certification, which they were officially granted in 1999.
In 2003, Valérie Clavelier (Bruno's wife) came to help her husband at the estate. Today, the couple can boast about their grapes, which are 100% chemical-free. The Domaine Bruno Clavelier has an annual output of 28,000 bottles of red and white wine (made with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Aligoté and Gamay grape varieties), non-filtered, thanks to its 6,5 hectares vineyard. A very low yield, but it's completely by design. Bruno Clavelier, the geology buff, manages to produce finely crafted cuvées, with strong personalities and which can perfectly illustrate the terroir they originate from.
