Exceptional Champagne, from Écueil
A dozen kilometers away from the beautiful city of Reims lies the little village of Écueil, in the Montagne de Reims terroir. Here, Frédéric Savart cultivates his 4 hectares of vineyard (85% of Pinot Noir and 15% of Chardonnay) with a passion that seems to never run dry. In his mind, nature is first and foremost "a laboratory of terroirs, as well as a creator of cuvées". According to the founding principles of biodynamics, Frédéric harvests his grapes by hand and he takes good care of the vineyard's ecosystem.
The Maison Savart has existed since the end of WWII, when René Savart and his wife decided to buy a few grapevines in the Champagne region. After a few years of selling their production to a local agricultural cooperative, René wanted to have more independence. He chose to keep a portion of his grapes and make his own wines, using his own name on the label. His son Daniel joined him in 1968 and the grandson Frédéric followed in 1993. The Maison Savart stopped working with the cooperative in 2001.
Frédéric, the young man who wanted to become a professional soccer player, ended up being one of the most promising champagne winemakers in the region. His cuvées are low-dosed by design, which gives birth to very striking champagnes, full of tension and vinosity. The United States and Japan are crazy about Savart champagnes, buying the few vintages available before they're even put in a bottle.
