Château de Beaucastel

A Perrin Family wine estate

The legendary Château de Beaucastel was built in 1549, the same year the Beaucastel family bought 30 hectares of land in the locality of Coudoulet, next to the city of Courthézon (in the south of the Rhône Valley). In 1687, Pierre de Beaucastel was granted the title of "Captain of the City of Courthézon" by King Louis XIV, to thank him for staying faithful to the French Crown during the siege of Orange, two years earlier.

In 1717, the Beaucastel family was forced to sell its many titles of nobility and possessions. This allowed a man called Étienne Gontard to become the new owner of the castle and the adjacent vineyard. He left them to his two children, François and Thérèse, who later sold everything to a local entrepreneur named Élie Dussaud. Then, in 1909, Pierre Tramier bought Beaucastel. Thanks to him, the castle finally became an official wine estate.

Pierre completely renovated the vineyard, as it had been destroyed by an invasion of phylloxera insects a few years prior. When Pierre Tramier died, his son-in-law Pierre Perrin took the helm of the estate, developing the family brand with the help of his son Jacques Perrin, until 1978. Pierre and Jacques both helped the estate tremendously, giving birth to Beaucastel's current identity. Jacques Perrin was also the one who chose to switch to organic agriculture in 1974. It was a no-brainer for him, since the methods used by the Perrin family since 1953 had always been somewhat organic. The Beaucastel philosophy thus remained the same since the early days: the terroir deserves the utmost respect, no matter what it takes. In this beautiful 130 hectares vineyard resurrected by the Perrins, one can only produce the most authentic of wines.

Today, the Château de Beaucastel offers many different red appellations, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes-du-Rhône. The Perrin family also works with the Château Miraval, in Provence, in collaboration with superstars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The Château de Beaucastel is currently managed by Jean-Pierre and François Perrin, assisted by their seven children. The Perrin Brothers have been awarded the title of "Men of the Year 2014", by British wine magazine Decanter. A well-deserved prize for a family that's done so much for the vineyard in the region.
