The legend of organic wine in Jura
The Domaine Pierre Overnoy can be found in the small village of Pupillin, next to Arbois, in the Jura region. The estate was founded in 1968 but Pierre Overnoy, its former owner, had been helping his winemaker of a father since the 1950’s. Pierre’s philosophy was always very simple: wine needs to remain pure. This is why he was always against using chemicals for his crops, even when all the other winemakers of the region started adopting them. It’s also the reason why he refused to add sulphites to his wine.
Years passed and Pierre Overnoy never wavered. That strength turned him into a celebrity, in the little world of organic winemaking, inspiring a lot of younger viticultors. 2020 was the consecration: the famous French magazine "La Revue du Vin de France" gave Pierre 3 stars in its Best French Wines guide. Celebrating his effort when it came to biodynamic methods, as well as the sheer quality of his natural wines. Pierre thus joined the ranks of other famous organic winemakers, like Jean-François Ganevat or André & Mireille Tissot.
In 2001, it was time for Pierre to retire. With no children of his own, he decided to leave the estate in the capable hands of Emmanuel Houillon (Adeline's brother), whom he always loved like a son and who had been working with him for more than 15 years. Today, Emmanuel and his wife Anne are in charge of the Domaine Pierre Overnoy and its 5,5 hectares of vineyard (mostly Chardonnay and Savagnin grapes). The wines they produce are very close to what Pierre could make, and the price of the bottles are reaching new heights since 2015, breaking all auction sales records.
