Exceptional Champagne house

Jacques Selosse settled in Champagne in 1947, in a little village called Avize (Côte des Blancs). Although Guillaume's grandfather was no professional winemaker, this wine enthusiast bought a few grapevines and started his own vineyard, selling his output to the local traders. In 1949, Jacques founded an actual estate and, 10 years after that, began producing his very own champagne. 1964 was the year he released the first vintage. At the time, Jacques could only produce up to 2,500 bottles and was forced to sell most of his grapes to pay for the upkeep.

Anselme Selosse, the son of Jacques, finished his winemaking studies in 1974, at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune (in the Burgundy region) and joined his dad at the family estate. After a few years as an apprentice, he became the new owner in 1980, which he managed with the help of his wife Corinne. The wine production increased considerably: from 2,500 to 12,000 bottles per year. Still, Anselme continued to sell the majority of his production to local champagne houses (such as Roederer, for example).

Anselme's uniqueness was the fact that he studied in Burgundy. Indeed, he was one of the first champagne winemakers that dared to use techniques only employed for white Burgundy wines at the time. On top of that, Anselme was a precursor when it came to biodynamics; one of his passions since 1996. His work paid off: in 1993 and 2017, the French wine magazine "La Revue du Vin de France" awarded him the title of "Winemaker of the Year". Selosse rose to the rank of big champagne houses like Krug and Salon.

Since 2011, Anselme has been working with his son Guillaume. The latter inherited the estate in 2020, when Anselme retired. Guilaume has the same drive as his dad: to never influence nature and let the vineyard do its job. Just like Anselme, he sees himself as a simple "harvester". Someone who doesn't tamper with the grapevines but only picks up what nature offers him. Thanks to his energy and open-mindedness, Guillaume Selosse is now considered by many to be one of the best Champagne winemakers around and a worthy successor to his father.
