When wine becomes like a mirror
Kenjiro Kagami, a Japanese citizen, was so in love with France that he decided to move here in 2001. Former Hitachi engineer, he was a wine enthusiast through and through. This immediately drove him to take winemaking lessons in Chambolle-Musigny (Burgundy). For two years, he honed his skills and strove to achieve his new dream: to create his very own estate and finally produce a wine that would satisfy him.
In 2010, his friend Jean-François Ganevat convinced him and his wife Mayumi to buy a house in the small village of Grusse, in the Jura region. On nearby limestone slopes, the now professional winemaker built his estate, the Domaine des Miroirs (“Mirror Estate” in English). An aptly-named winery, since “kagami” is the Japanese word for “mirror”. Because for Kenjiro, the work you do in the vineyard is reflected in your wine.
On his 3 hectares of land, Kenjiro Kagami cultivates Chardonnay and Savagnin, mainly. With only a tad of Poulsard and Trousseau here and there. His wines are 100% organic and the cuvées are vinified in old barrels, with no added sulphites, between four to five years. It's all very simple, but it works. The winemaker exports 80% of his production to Japan, which is also why his bottles are so hard to find in France.
