Tasting notes for the Puligny-Montrachet 2018 - Domaine de Montille

  • EYE: Pale yellow color, bright and luminous. The robe is clear, with green reflections characteristic of white wines from the Burgundy region.
  • NOSE: The wine exudes delicate and complex aromas. Floral notes of white flowers are accompanied by nuances of citrus fruits such as lemon and bergamot. Aromas of white-fleshed fruits like pear and peach blend with subtle hints of vanilla and toasted bread from oak barrel aging.
  • MOUTH: This Puligny-Montrachet is remarkably elegant and refined. It has a fresh attack with well-balanced acidity that brings liveliness and dynamism to the wine. The texture is silky and velvety, offering a pleasant sensation in the mouth. Flavors of white-fleshed fruits unfold harmoniously, accompanied by a slight mineral undertone reminiscent of the limestone soils of the region. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a refreshing sensation.

In short: Puligny-Montrachet 2018 from the Domaine de Montille is a white wine of great finesse and elegance. Its complex nose reveals floral, citrus, and white-fleshed fruit aromas, while the palate offers freshness, balance, and a beautiful expression of the Burgundian terroir. It is an ideal wine for enthusiasts of subtle and refined white wines, to be enjoyed alongside delicate dishes such as fish and seafood (pan-seared langoustines, scallops, or roasted sea bass), or savored on its own to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Under proper storage conditions (don't forget to keep your cellar cool and dark), it can evolve favorably for 5 to 8 years or more, allowing the aromas to develop and the wine's complexity to deepen.

A taste of the authentic Volnay terroir!

The de Montille name may have been around since the 17th century, and the Volnay estate (on the Côte de Beaune) built after the French Revolution, 1947 is the year the family really entered the wine world. Hubert de Montille, famous lawyer during the day and skilled winemaker at night decided to resurrect the old vineyard and sell his own wine. He may only have had 3 hectares of grapevines left from the original 12, but their quality was undeniable.

Musigny, Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes-Mares... Some of the best appellations were growing in the Domaine de Montille. During the 1950's, Hubert realized something very important: wine cannot be treated like a simple product. The true visionary that he was understood that he had to help the Burgundy terroir shine through his wines, to strive for authenticity and go beyond the basic limitations of the wine market.

That quest for quality, Hubert transmitted it to his children before he died in 2014. Today, Étienne and Alix de Montille, helped by their globe-trotting cellar master Brian Sieve, are co-owners of the Domaine de Montille and its 20 hectares vineyard. Alix is in charge of the white wines and her brother Étienne of the red ones. The latter is also the owner of the Racines Vineyard, in the United States. Thanks to them, the estate is now fully biodynamic since 2001, producing the purest wines possible.
