A taste of the authentic Volnay terroir!
The de Montille name may have been around since the 17th century, and the Volnay estate (on the Côte de Beaune) built after the French Revolution, 1947 is the year the family really entered the wine world. Hubert de Montille, famous lawyer during the day and skilled winemaker at night decided to resurrect the old vineyard and sell his own wine. He may only have had 3 hectares of grapevines left from the original 12, but their quality was undeniable.
Musigny, Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes-Mares... Some of the best appellations were growing in the Domaine de Montille. During the 1950's, Hubert realized something very important: wine cannot be treated like a simple product. The true visionary that he was understood that he had to help the Burgundy terroir shine through his wines, to strive for authenticity and go beyond the basic limitations of the wine market.
That quest for quality, Hubert transmitted it to his children before he died in 2014. Today, Étienne and Alix de Montille, helped by their globe-trotting cellar master Brian Sieve, are co-owners of the Domaine de Montille and its 20 hectares vineyard. Alix is in charge of the white wines and her brother Étienne of the red ones. The latter is also the owner of the Racines Vineyard, in the United States. Thanks to them, the estate is now fully biodynamic since 2001, producing the purest wines possible.
