Champagne Blanc de Blancs Grand-Cru Extra-Brut Cuvée Rossignol 2014 - Maison Vauversin
AOC Champagne, Grand Cru, Blanc de Blancs Extra-Brut, Vintage 2014, Cuvée Rossignol, Maison Vauversin
The Vauversin family, specialized in champagne, has been working in the vineyard since 1640 (according to its oldest archives) and has become a true business in 1930, when Fernand Vauversin turned it into a bona fide brand and started making his own wine instead of selling his production to various merchants. He even managed to build a strong network thanks to his former army comrades.
This Champagne house, located in the Côte de Blancs, next to the town of Oger, is 100% Chardonnay. Bruno Vauversin and his son Laurent, the inheritors of a legacy 15 generations in the making, are now in charge of the estate. Together, they care for the 3 hectares vineyard and its old grape vines, and they do it in the most organic way possible. In 2011, they chose to go full biodynamic, when it wasn’t popular yet in the Champagne region.
Laurent and his father are clearly in love with their vineyard, and it seems to be quite reciprocal. The Maison Vauversin produces very dense champagnes, with very low dosage (the addition of sugar to the wine). They all have a strong personality, born from fruits that have been pampered for years by two talented winemakers.

A Champagne treasure, since 1640
The Maison Vauversin, currently managed by Laurent Vauversin and his father Bruno, has existed since the 17th century. In 1640, Nicolas de Vauversin was the first to plant grapevines in the little village of Oger (near the town of Épernay), on the Côte des Blancs. Fifteen generations came after him. In 1930, Bruno's grandfather Fernand Vauversin, became a pioneer: he stopped selling his grapes to local wine merchants and decided to commercialize his own Champagne. In his endeavour, he was helped by his former military unit, the friends who promoted his bottles far and wide.
Laurent loves his vineyard above all, not as a production site but as a complete ecosystem he needs to protect, with its rhythm, its biodiversity, its soul… The entire estate switched to organic winemaking in 2011. At the time, it was a very difficult financial decision for the young independent winegrower, but he was adamant in his decision and never regretted it. In the words of Laurent himself: a grand cru Champagne can only be born from the finest grapes. He wants his customers to taste the real Oger terroir when they open one of his bottles.
