Côte du Jura, Cuvée Marguerite 2016 - Magnum - Jean-François Ganevat
Côtes du Jura, Cuvée Marguerite, Magnum, 2016 Vintage, Domaine Jean-François Genevat
The domaine:
Declared "Best Winemaker of 2018" by the Revue du Vin de France, Jean-Francois Ganevat is a phenomenon. His meticulousness and attention to detail can't be bested, and his unique knack for unlocking all the nuances of the terroir in his wine is awe-inspiring. His 8 hectares vineyard in the Jura only grow exceptional fruits. Here, the grapevines are around 50 years old and they are well taken care of as they age (Jean-Francois is fond of organic farming and only uses a small amount of sulfites).
The wine:
A dry white wine, with a mineral character. This specific variety of Chardonnay (called "Melon a Queue Rouge") was made entirely organically, and is best paired with either fish or poultry.

A real artist of the Jura vineyard
Jean-François is a celebrity in the Jura region. He came to Rotalier in 1998, after a stint as a cellar master in Burgundy (working for Jean-Marc Morey, in Chassagne-Montrachet). Jean-François progressively tried his hand at a more organic approach to winemaking and, in 2006, he decided to go full biodynamics, in order to produce wines that are 100% natural.
For him, what makes a great wine is the taste of fruit above all else, nothing beats the crunchiness of grapes... alcohol and sunlight are only secondary. Nicknamed by some "the most Burgundian of all Jura winemakers", and by others simply "Fanfan", Jean-François Ganevat possesses incredible skills and a very keen eye All in the service of his vineyard.
Jean-François is on a quest for perfection. He takes good care of his 25 grape varieties, across 9 hectares: he measures, checks, plans... plows by horse, refuses to use sulphites or even add yeasts... You have to give the man credit, which is exactly what the Revue des Vins de France did when it offered him the "Winemaker of the Year 2018" award.
