Description
  •  Presentation of the winery

Château d' Yquem is one of the most famous wines in the world. The vineyard is 104 ha, there are currently mainly gravelly ridges on a clay substrate. There are two varieties, Sémillon dominates for its richness and volume and Sauvignon for its finesse and aromas. During the harvest, there are nearly 200 pickers who spend nearly six times on each leg at different times of the harvest to select carefully the grapes mature and sort those who do not deserve the bottle. The estate produces around 110,000 bottles a good year, we can say that a vine gives at most a glass of wine, and even then not every year. It happened nine times during the 20th century that the production is not considered to warrant at his vintage.

Château d'Yquem

A flagship of Sauternes

The Château d'Yquem is part of a quite long history. It all began in 1593, when Jacques Sauvage became the manager of the Sauternes estate and built the current castle. His family developed the vineyard and were granted ownership of Yquem in 1711, by decree of King Louis XIV. Many years later, in 1826, the Château turned into a very fruitful winery.

Thanks to Françoise Joséphine de Sauvage d’Yquem, and her grandson Romain-Bertrand de Lur-Saluces, the estate became a worldwide phenomenon. Yquem found its way into the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, as a "Premier Cru Supérieur". The Château d'Yquem's reputation rose dramatically: everybody wanted to try its wines!

In 1918, the Marquis Bertrand de Lur-Saluces, Romain-Bertrand's nephew, took the helm of the estate and helped develop it for many years. He fought for the Sauternes AOC, as well as the Chateau-bottled mention. Before Bertrand died, in 1966, his nephew Alexandre inherited the position.and managed Yquem until the LVMH Group bought the estate in 1999.
