100% organic winemaking in Varrains
Since 1999, Antoine Sanzay has taken care of the family vineyard he's inherited from his grandparents, in the village of Varrains (Loire Valley, western France). With tireless passion, he cultivates the soil of his 11 hectares of Saumur and Saumur-Champigny, like six generations of vintners before him. His wines, which he started producing at the estate in 2002, are purely organic.
Antoine has a deep respect for the vineyard, which you can almost taste when you open one of his bottles. He often jokes about using antiquated, pre-war methods, but one must admit they clearly bear fruits! It is a real labor of love for him and it doesn't stop in the vineyard: Antoine uses natural yeasts in the wine making process, works with the lees, values low yields...
Former rising star in the Saumur community, Antoine has now become a well-respected wine maker. He's especially known for his 4 hectares of "Poyeux", a terroir very close to the famous Clos Rougeard, formerly owned by the Foucault Brothers (who were organic wine precursors). Because of that, Antoine is also often seen as one of their spiritual successors.
