One of the treasures of Saint-Julien
The Branaire-Ducru vineyard started its life during the 17th century. Bought in 1680 by Jean-Baptiste Braneyre, a renowned notary from Bordeaux, the grapevines were then sold to the Duluc family. They founded the actual Château Branaire, which reached world fame thanks to the Official 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It rewarded their wines, giving them the “Quatrième Cru Classé” title in the Saint-Julien appellation. When Louis and Justin Duluc died, the estate was sold to Gustave Ducru, giving birth to the “Branaire-Ducru” name.
Since 1988, the Médoc castle belongs to a family business headed by Patrick Maroteaux, a man who takes wine very seriously. The 50 hectares vineyard is located in a superb terroir, composed of quaternary gravel on a clay soil. The vineyard is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, 22% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc.
