At the top of Saint-Émilion
Built in 1745 by Abbot Raymond de Sèze, the castle currently standing atop the hills of Saint-Émilion (not far from the Château La Mondotte) took the name "Troplong Mondot" in 1850. That year, Raymond Troplong, a lawyer, bought the property and, as was customary, added his own name before "Mondot". As for the estate itself, it is one of the largest in the region, with 33 hectares of vineyard (90% Merlot).
The Bordeaux estate started becoming famous around 1920, after the Valette family bought it. This newfound success built up and finally reached its peak in 1981, when Christine Valette took the helm of the estate. She fought fiercely for years and ultimately managed to get the Château Troplong Mondot into the 1955 Saint-Émilion Classification, making it a "1er Grand Cru Classé B".
Nowadays, the former CEO of Cos d'Estournel, Aymeric de Gironde, manages the Château Troplong Mondot, since the SCOR group acquired the property. To diversify their activities, the Château now also doubles as a sumptuous guest house, as well as a Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant: the famous "Belles Perdrix de Troplong Mondot".
