Tasting notes for the Pommard 1er Cru "Les Grands Épenots" 2019 - Pierre Girardin

  • EYE: The wine has a deep and intense red color with violet reflections. Its color is rich and vibrant, indicating its youthfulness. The clarity is perfect, indicating high quality. One can also observe a certain density and a slight viscosity in the glass.
  • NOSE: Intense aromas of black fruits such as black cherry and blackberry, blending with delicate notes of spices, licorice, and black pepper. Subtle nuances of undergrowth, tobacco, and leather add an additional dimension to this aromatic bouquet. Notes of vanilla and woody undertones from barrel aging can also be detected.
  • MOUTH: This Pommard reveals its power and elegance. The flavors of black fruits are generous and concentrated, with great intensity. The tannins are firm yet silky, offering a velvety and harmonious texture. A beautiful acidity balances the overall profile, while subtle notes of spices, licorice, and undergrowth unfold. The finish is long, persistent, and leaves an impression of depth and complexity.

In short: The Pommard 1er Cru "Les Grands Épenots" 2019 by Pierre Girardin is a wine of great finesse and remarkable intensity. Its complex nose and balanced palate make it an ideal choice for enthusiasts of red Burgundy wines. It pairs perfectly with roasted meats, game birds, wild mushrooms, and aged cheeses. This bottle can be stored for 10-15 years under proper conditions, allowing its aromas to further develop and its tannins to harmonize. It is a wine that will clearly gain complexity and elegance over time.

The wunderkind of Meursault!

Son of wine grower Vincent Girardin and proud member of the 13th generation of his winemaking family, Pierre-Vincent was practically born in a Burgundy winery. When he was 15, he chose to uphold the tradition and become a winemaker himself, learning the trade in his father's 2 hectares vineyard. A wise decision in retrospect, since Pierre Girardin is now the owner of an eponymous estate in Meursault (Côte de Beaune).

He was only 19 when he released his first wine cuvée: the 2017. And at the time, it already sold quite well. Pierre-Vincent Girardin might be young, but he showed that he was already well-versed in some of the most effective winemaking techniques. Thanks to his passion for traveling and his love for discovering the best wines around, he gradually managed to hone his skills and acquired a lot of experience along the way.

The ambitious winemaker wants to let the Burgundy terroir express itself, more than anything. To that end, he's decided to expand his estate in the next two years (from 4.5 to 10 hectares in total) and plant some new famous appellations he's recently managed to get his hands on. He also plans to entirely switch to organic wine making in the next five years, in his never-ending quest to always let the vineyard come first.
