The winery was created by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. Currently, it’s Angelo Gaja who is the owner of the winery, he is graduate of the University of Alba wine and holds a Masters in Economics from the University of Turin. This vineyard is internationally recognized for the quality of its wines and is the source of innovative technology, such as the use of French oak barrels. It is also the first winemaker in Piedmont planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Angelo Gaja is known in the entire world for its outstanding wines, which are of great elegance, opulence, its wines reflect the terroir. Angelo Gaja is one of the pioneers in the production of mono- varietal wine in the Piedmont. The quality of its wines is so exceptional that the Wine Spectator considers its wines as “arguably the finest Italian wines ever produced”. He played a very important role in the reputation of Italian wines from Piedmont. In 1994, the Gaja family bought his first winery in Tuscany, Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino . This area produced three extraordinary Brunelo di Montalcino. In 1996, Gaja bought a new property in Tuscany, located Ca'Marcanda Castagneo Carducci in Bolgheri. The Piedmont area is about 100 hectares, located in the district of Barbaresco and Barolo. Angelo Gaja is a charismatic man, he was elected in 1998, "Man of the Year" by Decanter magazine, he is internationally recognized as the best producer of Italian wines.
Sori Tildin 1990 has a deep red-purple color. This wine is very concentrated, the nose offers aromas of blackcurrant, black cherries, but also mineral notes, vegetable and exotic spices. On the palate, this wine is rich, with a complex and powerful structure.

Great Italian wine estate
The Gaja family has made its home in the Piedmont since the 17th century. In 1859, they released their very first bottle of Barbaresco, produced on the 2 hectares of vineyard from the tiny estate managed by Giovanni Gaja. He was the son of two tavern owners who left Spain for Italy. At the time, he sold his wines at the tavern as well as to the Italian army. Over the years, he improved his equipment and catalog, soon acquiring a solid reputation as a winemaker. As a result, his wines started selling like crazy.
His young son, Angelo (Sr.) was helping his father at the estate and soon inherited the entire business. With his wife Clothilde, Angelo has managed the brand beautifully. In 1905, his level of exigence and ambition led him to develop new methods of winemaking, in order to improve the quality of his products. Some years later, Angelo’s son (who was called Giovanni like his ancestor) took the helm of the estate, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He acquired many vineyard plots, such as Sori Tildin, Costa Russi, Montalcino, Sori San Lorenzo…
Then, in 1961, the fourth generation of Gajas, a young man named Angelo (Jr.) entered the scene. He still works in the 100 hectares vineyard today, located in the Piedmont, and he was the first to buy French barrels to vinify his wine production, in 1967. He also bought other, smaller estates in Tuscany. Thanks to his oenologist, Guido Rivella, Angelo Jr. (now a worldwide celebrity) has achieved his goal: to revolutionize Italian wine while preserving the soul of the local terroir. A quest shared with his wife Lucia and their two daughters, Gaia and Rossana.
