The Puligny-Montrachet reference
The estate was founded by the eponymous Étienne Sauzet, after the first World War. He inherited a vineyard in Burgundy, located near the small village of Puligny, on the Côte de Beaune. He took a liking to winegrowing and slowly expanded his plot of land, buying more grapevines (of the Chardonnay variety, mainly) around Montrachet. Étienne really enjoyed working at the estate. So much so that it soon became a real family business, with his grand-daughter Jeanine and her husband Gérard Boudot joining him.
Thanks to them and their hard work, the winemaking process was greatly improved upon. Since 2002, Jeanine's daughter Émilie (and her husband Benoît Riffault) has taken the helm of the Domaine Étienne Sauzet and its 15 hectares of vineyard. They both uphold the same values as their parents, who began turning the business into a wine trading company during the 1990's. Jeanine is also responsible for switching to biodynamics in 2010, to preserve the local terroir.
