Biodynamic Wine from the Loire Valley
The Domaine Belargus, named after a blue butterfly native to the region, embodies the lifelong dream of Ivan Massonnat, a wine enthusiast determined to restore the glory of a vineyard planted by Catholic monks in the 11th century. Established in 2018 in Val-du-Layon (Maine-et-Loire department), the young wine estate is dedicated to restoring the image of a grape variety too often overlooked: the Chenin, which thrives on the ancient terroir of Anjou Noir, not far from the city of Angers.
On his 24 hectares of vineyards, Ivan adopts a parcel-by-parcel approach inspired by the famous Burgundian climats and promptly decided to embrace biodynamic practices. The Domaine Belargus produces wines that come from some of the most remarkable plots in Anjou Noir, including the grand cru "Les Quarts-de-Chaume" and the two monopoles "Le Coteau des Treilles" and "Le Clos des Ruchères".
Surrounded by promising young talents from the Loire Valley and pioneers such as Jo Pithon (since the acquisition of the renowned Domaine Pithon-Paillé, a benchmark for Anjou wine enthusiasts) and the late Guy Bossard (a precursor who adopted organic viticulture in 1975, nicknamed the "Pope of Muscadet"), Ivan is committed to establishing Anjou as one of the best terroirs for dry white wines in France.
