Iconic and Organic Wine since 1984
Nestled on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Loire river near the town of Angers, the exclusive vineyard of the Coulée de Serrant, owned by the Joly family since the 1960s, embodies viticultural excellence with its eponymous AOC covering 7 small hectares. The old vines, aged between 35 and 80 years, cover steep slopes that majestically overlook the river. The vineyard, steeped in history, reveals its splendor through three iconic wines: the eponymous "Coulée de Serrant", "Le Clos de la Bergerie", and "Les Vieux Clos".
The nearl thousand-year-old vineyard dates back to 1130 when Cistercian monks considered grapevines to be divine plants par excellence, capable of purifying the very soil in which it grew. Today, led by Nicolas Joly, the sole owner since 1978 and a fervent advocate of biodynamics since 1981, the Domaine de la Coulée de Serrant flourishes in producing wines of exceptional quality, leaving its unique mark on the Loire Valley.
The wines, derived from the old Chenin grape variety, cultivated through mass selection and grown on schist and quartz soils worked by horse, express the quintessence of the terroir. With low yields of around 20 hectoliters per hectare, the Coulée de Serrant offers connoisseurs wines with an almost limitless cellaring potential, requiring at least fifteen years of waiting before opening one of these precious bottles. The Savennières "Coulée de Serrant" appellation stands among the best white wines in France.
