Tasting Note – Hermitage 2023 – Domaine Yann Chave

Appearance: Deep, intense garnet color with violet hues. The brilliant rim hints at both concentration and elegance, promising a wine of great structure and finesse.
Nose: A grand wine with a refined aromatic profile. Initially discreet, the bouquet gradually reveals layers of ripe blackcurrant, black plum, graphite, and exotic spices. With aeration, notes of violet, fine woods, blond tobacco, and black truffle emerge, suggesting superb ageing potential.
Palate: The attack is full and commanding. From the first sip, the texture impresses with its depth, density, and vertical precision. The tannins are tightly woven, refined, still youthful yet remarkably well integrated. The flavor profile unfolds with pure black fruit, noble spice, and a subtle saline touch that enhances the length. The balance between power and freshness is masterfully achieved. A wine of architecture and intent—precise, vibrant, and noble.
Vinification & Ageing: Crafted from old-vine Syrah grown on the finest granite slopes of Hermitage hill. The grapes are fully destemmed, with gentle extractions and a long maceration of around 4 weeks. Ageing takes place in used 600L demi-muids for 12 to 14 months, allowing the terroir to speak without interference. No new oak, no excess—just purity and precision.

In Summary: The Hermitage 2023 by Yann Chave is a benchmark wine of the appellation—layered, focused, and deeply expressive. A perfect match for haute cuisine: think roast pigeon with wild mushrooms, dry-aged beef, or herb-crusted lamb. Decant generously if opened young, or cellar confidently for 10 to 20 years to let its full complexity unfold.

The quiet virtuoso of Crozes-Hermitage

Founded in the heart of France’s northern Rhône Valley, Domaine Yann Chave is a family-run estate that has become a benchmark for Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage wines. After joining his father Bernard in 1996, Yann took over the reins of the domaine and infused it with a modern, organic vision. Today, the estate covers over 20 hectares—nearly 19.24 ha in Crozes-Hermitage (spread across Mercurol, La Roche-de-Glun, and Pont de l’Isère) and 1.15 ha on the storied slopes of Hermitage, notably in the Beaume and Péleat lieux-dits.

Certified organic since 2007, the vineyard is cultivated with great care and minimal intervention. In the cellar, Yann Chave focuses on precision and purity of fruit: grapes are fully destemmed, followed by a long maceration of 20 to 25 days in stainless steel vats. The wines are then aged for 9 to 12 months, either in tanks or large oak foudres, depending on the style and expression of each cuvée.

Production remains limited, with a focus on authenticity and terroir. From the classic Crozes-Hermitage Domaine to the more structured and age-worthy Le Rouvre, each wine is a reflection of its origin—showcasing the richness of Syrah, balanced by finesse, minerality, and freshness.

Domaine Yann Chave represents a discreet yet powerful voice in the Rhône, crafting elegant, expressive wines that remain true to their roots and to a vision of sustainable excellence.
