Family estate of Gevrey-Chambertin
The Domaine Sérafin, Père & Fils, was founded in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1947, by Stanislaus Serafin. He was a Polish citizen who left his home in the late 1930's, hoping to escape the coming war. Unfortunately, he had to fight as a soldier once in France and was taken prisoner by the Germans. Freed in 1945, he started working as a simple employee in a few local vineyards, while he bought a few affordable plots of land in Burgundy. The goal was to create his own wine business. In 1957, his son Christian came to help him in this endeavor.
Father and son built the house that still sits in the middle of the vineyard today, as well as the very first wine cellar. During the 1980's, Christian was the one who suggested they should bottle their own wine at the estate. He also took care of the first sales outside of Europe, dealing with the logistics for his dad. When Stanislaus died in 1988, Christian Sérafin inherited everything and kept making wine. The Côte de Nuits cuvées made by Stanislaus' son are not filtered; subtle yet quite powerful.
In 1996, he bought additional parcels, such as Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny. In total, Christian now owns a 5,5 hectares vineyard. Since 1998, two new recruits have started working with him: Frédérique Goulley, Christian's niece who's in charge of the vinification and winegrowing, and Karine Sérafin. The latter is his daughter, who came in 2006 and is currently managing the entire business. Together, the two women are the new guardians of the Sérafin legacy. They make sure the methods used by Christian and Stanislaus are still alive today and they take the utmost care of the vineyard. They recently opted for organic winemaking, although they're not officially certified yet.
