An iconic international estate
Founded by Fernand Pernot in 1930, the little business located in Gevrey-Chambertin was managed by Fernand himself and his sister, who married into the Fourrier family. Then, in 1961, Fernand's nephew, Jean-Claude Fourrier, joined his mother and uncle at the wine estate in order to learn the trade. Eight years later, Fernand allowed Jean-Claude to add his own name to the family business, giving birth to the "Domaine Pernot-Fourrier". In 1981, Fernand passed away. His nephew decided to change the name of the estate one more time, creating the "Domaine Jean-Claude Fourrier".
Nobody could foresee that Jean-Claude, the car enthusiast, would end up becoming a winemaker. It actually was the same thing for his son Jean-Marie Fourrier, who originally studied to be an airline pilot. Still, in 1992, Jean-Marie and his sister Isabelle came to help their dad at the estate. The latter thus officially became simply known as the "Domaine Fourrier". After that, the young man trained with some of the biggest winemakers you could find in Burgundy, such as Henri Jayer and Joseph Drouhin. In 1994, when he was only 23 years old, Jean-Marie inherited the entire family business, since Jean-Claude decided to leave the winemaking world behind, entrusting his son with the estate.
Thanks to his hard work and newfound love for the vineyard, Jean-Marie managed to overcome many hardships. He was struggling to regain customers, after a dispute between his father and famous wine critic Robert Parker, but he ultimately succeeded in placing his wines on the highest step of the podium. Nowadays, the Domaine Fourrier has become such a huge name in the foreign markets that 95% of the estate's production is reserved for exportation only (in 27 different countries, no less). On the international wine scene, Fourrier rivals other famous estates such as Romanée-Conti, Rousseau and Roumier.
