Tasting notes for the Gevrey-Chambertin 2017 - Domaine David Duband

  • EYE: This wine presents an intense ruby red robe, a sign of its youth. Its clarity and brilliance attest to precise winemaking. Purple reflections add a vibrant touch to this already attractive color.
  • NOSE: A Pinot Noir that offers an expressive and fruity bouquet. Aromas of black cherry and blackberry are pleasantly supported by delicate notes of licorice and dried flowers. A subtle spicy undertone, reminiscent of black pepper, adds an additional aromatic complexity to this elegant nose.
  • MOUTH: This cuvée has a lively attack, showcasing its balanced tannic structure. Flavors of red fruits, notably raspberry and red currant, express themselves with freshness. A slight minerality underscores the complexity of this wine, while the persistent finish offers well-integrated nuances of vanilla and wood.

In short: We greatly appreciated the Gevrey-Chambertin 2017 from Domaine David Duband, with its intense ruby red robe. On the nose, aromas of black cherry and licorice create a fruity olfactory experience. On the palate, a lively attack unveils flavors of fresh red fruits, balanced by subtle minerality and a persistent finish with vanilla notes. Enjoy within 3 to 8 years to fully appreciate its fruity potential while allowing room for its evolution. Pair this wine with a ribeye steak, a plate of roasted vegetables, a selection of soft cheeses, or even a pasta dish with mushrooms.

The rising star of the Côte de Nuits

It all began in 1965, when Pierre Duband founded his 15 hectares wine estate in the little village of Chevannes (right in the middle of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits). He also owned 5 hectares of vineyard in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Back then, Pierre was simply selling his grape harvest to various wine merchants in Beaune and didn't make his own wine at the estate.

In 1991, François Feuillet, then CEO of Trigano (the French specialist of camping gear and accessories) acquired the vineyard belonging to the Duband family. He took this opportunity to put David Duband, Pierre's son, in charge of the entire business. The young man was only 19 years old at the time. The Feuillet family owned 17 hectares of vineyard in total and David was allowed to use half of it to experiment with winemaking. The other half was reserved for the Trigano group. Thanks to the buyout, David officially became a winemaker and could now bottle his own wine.

Four years later, in 1995, Pierre Duband retired. That same year, his son took the helm of the family business and created his very own estate, turning his name into his new brand. Today, David owns two dozens of hectares of vineyard, with 23 appellations in total, such as the grands crus Charmes-ChambertinLatricières-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis "Clos de la Roche". Through his work, we can see the influence of his father, of course, but also some of his contemporaries; especially Robert Jayer, his former mentor and cousin of world-famous "Master of Pinot Noir" Henri Jayer, and Armand Rousseau. Celebrated by the wine guide Bettane & Desseauve, in the early 2000’s, David is now one of the rising stars of Burgundy wine.

In his endless quest for perfection, David converted his entire estate to organic agriculture in 2006. He thus banished the use of chemicals and began a deep reflection on how to preserve the soil and the natural ecosystems found in the vineyard. The Domaine David Duband has an output of 200,000 bottles of red and white wines per year. The red cuvées are entirely made using Pinot Noir grapes and the white cuvées are 100% Chardonnay. His son Louis-Auguste joined him at the estate in 2019.
