Natural wines from Alsace
In the Kleinknecht family, winemaking has been a tradition for 7 generations. Located in the peaceful little village of Mittelbergheim, in the Alsace region, their family wine estate has existed since 1621. André Kleinknecht is in control of the entire company (since 1991) and he's also the one who led the estate down the road of biodynamics. He actually used to be a big fan of organic winemaking before, but felt that it simply wasn't enough and that he had to go beyond organic agriculture. The switch was officialized in 2002, with a Demeter certification to boot. Surrounding André, we find a group of other biodynamic or natural winemakers, such as Lucas Rieffel and Catherine Riss.
Thanks to his 9.5 hectares vineyard, André aims to make the best wines possible, inspired by Jean-Pierre Frick, the pope of biodynamics in Alsace. In this endless quest for perfection, he keeps two important things in mind: making sure no harm comes to the environment and giving customers a high-quality product. The main grape varieties André works with are the Riesling, Sylvaner, Gewurztraminer and Muscat. All of them grow in the region. Currently, André Kleinknecht works with his two children (Jules and Fanny) in the hopes that they will one day continue his legacy.
