  •  Presentation of the winery

In the heart of the Var region, not too far from the city of Fréjus, lies the Château d’Esclans. Nowadays, only the cellar still remains, as a reminder of what the castle used to look like when it was built by the Comte de Provence Alphonse II, during the 12th century. In 1201, he granted the building and surrounding land to a man called Gérard de Villeneuve. After that, the Château d’Esclans would know many more owners, such as the families Ranque, Caussemille, Perraud and others.

Today, the Château is managed by Sacha Lichine, who bought it in 2006 but then sold it to the LVMH Group in 2019. Lichine has completely disrupted the rosé wine market, since he aims to make very high quality products and seeks to sell them all over the world. His dream? To produce the perfect rosé wine. His “Garrus” cuvée, for example, was the most expensive rosé wine in the world, when it was released.

The 74 hectares vineyard is the home of the certified Côtes de Provence appellation, and many grape vines here are more than 90 years old. Only luxury rosé wines come out of this estate, such as the famous Whispering Angel and Rock Angel. Thanks to Sacha’s commitment, work and skills (he also had some help from Patrick Léon, who collaborated with the Rothschild family for more than 30 years), the Château d’Esclans has now become one of the biggest names in Provence.

Château d'Esclans

One of the most famous rosé estates!

The foundations of Castle d'Esclans were laid out at the time of the Roman Republic. Located at the heart of the valley of the same name, between Cannes and Saint-Tropez (Provence), this estate's cellars are the oldest of the region. They were there when the Count of Provence, Alfonso II, gave the property to Gérard de Villeneuve, in 1201, and they're still being used today, eight hundred and twenty years later.

Over the years, the castle has had many owners, until the 21st century. In 1999, Sacha Lichine, a Russian born winemaker, decided to sell the Château Prieuré-Lichine estate he inherited from his father, and went looking for a new vineyard in Southern France. He bought the Château d'Esclans and its 74 hectares of grapevines in 2006. Sacha then went on to produce high-end rosé wines, rivaling even the finest white wines.

He turned the Château d'Esclans into an exceptional estate, making rosé wines that are now considered to be among the best ones, at the same levels as some big international names like Miraval or Minuty. Sacha Lichine is probably one of the precursors who helped rosé wine acquire such a huge reputation throughout the entire world. Talent, skills and terroir are the keywords of this now legendary estate, which sells almost all of its wine production outside of France.
