Great Provence wines
The Château Fontainebleau is located in the Haut Var, on the commune of the Val, right in the middle of the Provence region. The building itself is surrounded by 170 hectares of land; 30 of which being entirely dedicated to winegrowing (17 different grape varieties coexist in this microclimate, such as the Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet, Carignan, Ugni Blanc…) Fontainebleau is an important piece of French History, as it was the official place of residence of many French rulers, from Francis I to Henri IV, Louis XIV and even Napoleon III.
The construction date of the medieval castle remains unknown to this day, but there are some documents mentioning the year 1137. It was razed in the 16th century and then replaced by the current Renaissance building. As for the vineyard, it was possibly planted around 1538, when the gardens of the residence were completely redone. Forgotten for years, the Fontainebleau terroir was resurrected in 2009, thanks to the intervention of Jean-Louis Bouchard, one of the richest men in France and a true wine enthusiast.
On this clay, limestone and volcanic soil (a blend of tuff and pelite rocks), Jean-Louis and his wife Céline chose to go with full biodynamic agriculture as soon as 2013, in association with famous oenologist Valérie Courrèges. Here, the soil is tilled with infinite care, the fertilizers are purely organic (herbal infusions and composts) and the grape harvesting is entirely done by hand. The Château Fontainebleau has been AB certified since 2019. The resulting wines are fresh, balanced and full of personality.
