Champagne House in Merfy since 1683
In the 7th century, winemakers in the small village of Merfy, located in the Montagne de Reims (a renowned Champagne region), collaborated with the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint-Thierry, founded in the year 500. These monks were renowned vintners and planted numerous vineyard parcels on the hills of Merfy, generously sharing their knowledge with the local population. Back then, each plot planted by the monks was meticulously catalogued according to its geology, soils, subsoils... This collaboration gave birth to many viticultural "Lieux-Dits".
One of the families that received the monks' knowledge is the Taillet family, with the earliest traces dating back to 1490 with Nicolas Taillet. Starting in 1700, Fiacre Taillet documented his winemaking experience in his very detailed memoirs, sharing stories about his work and his family. The Chartogne-Taillet family continues this tradition of writing and craftsmanship to this day.
Current practices draw inspiration from this rich heritage, incorporating sustainable and biodynamic viticulture methods. Emphasis is placed on soil diversity and vineyard health, with the goal of preserving the terroir's true essence. The Chartogne-Taillet estate, led by Alexandre Chartogne, who serves as both winemaker and owner, produces a variety of champagnes, from traditional brut to special cuvées.
