Tasting notes for the Musigny Grand Cru 2017 - Domaine Jacques Prieur

  • EYE: The color of this Musigny Grand Cru 2017 presents a deep and captivating ruby red hue. Its appearance suggests remarkable concentration and maturity, with a clarity that attests to its exceptional quality.
  • NOSE: This wine reveals a complex aromatic palette. It unveils aromas of ripe fruits, ranging from red to black, such as black cherry, raspberry, and blackberry. These fruity notes are subtly accompanied by delicate floral effusions of violet and rose, adding elegance to the ensemble. Hints of sweet spices, licorice, and discreet woody notes complete this true olfactory symphony.
  • MOUTH: The cuvée offers a majestic tasting experience. The attack is bold and powerful, marked by firm yet velvety tannins that bestow an imposing structure upon the wine. The flavors of red and black fruits are intensely present, accompanied by subtle nuances of sweet spices, tobacco, and black truffle. Delicate minerality and perfectly controlled acidity bring freshness and precision that add depth to this sensory experience. The finish is long, graceful, and lingers in the mouth for a long time.

In short: The Musigny Grand Cru 2017 from the Domaine Jacques Prieur is a wine that skillfully balances power and elegance. It possesses exceptional aging potential. By storing this wine in optimal cellar conditions (a stable temperature of around 12°C, adequate humidity, darkness), it will continue to improve for 15 to 25 years or even more. Over time, it will develop greater complexity and deeper harmony. We have here a prestigious wine that deserves to be enjoyed with refined dishes such as Beef Wellington, duck à l'orange, or roasted pigeon.

A huge collection of Burgundy appellations

Claude Duvergey and Marie Taboureau founded the Meursault estate in 1865. At first a simple trading house, it gradually turned into a real wine estate in 1879, when the couple bought the "Propriété des Herbeux". Before Claude's death in 1920, the couple left everything they had (including the many grape vines they acquired throughout their lives) to Hélène Taboureau, who was Marie's niece, and her son: Jacques Prieur. The latter would become the future cofounder of the 1924 Paulée of Meursault (with the help of the Count Jules Lafon), as well as one of the founding members of the "Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin". He gave his name to the estate in 1965, giving birth to the current Domaine Jacques Prieur.

The main strength of the estate is the incredible selection of appellations available. Since its creation, the Domaine Jacques Prieur managed to accumulate a huge collection of parcels located on the Côte d'Or (which includes the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune). In total, 9 grands crus and 14 premiers crus can be found in the estate's catalog. Here, you can find big names such as Corton-Charlemagne, Montrachet, Chambertin, Volnay-Santenots, MusignyClos-de-Vougeot and many others.

In 1988, part of the estate was sold to an investment firm led by Jean-Pierre Labruyère, the man behind the Champion supermarkets. Nowadays, Daniel Godefroy is in charge of the 21 hectares vineyard. Thanks to his hard work and the acumen of Jean-Pierre, the terroir has become priority number one, which obviously led to a total conversion to organic winemaking. Today, the Domaine Jacques Prieur is owned by both the Labruyère family and the descendants of the Prieur family. It produces wines with a strong pedigree, containing the very soul of each Burgundy climate.
