The female pope of biodynamics
CEO of the Maison Leroy (located in the Côte de Nuits) since 1971, Lalou Bize-Leroy is quite an incredible woman: always full of energy, extremely demanding, and whose love for the vineyard is equal to her talent as a winemaker. For many people, she is also known as the female Pope of Burgundy biodynamic wine. A well-deserved title.
Born in 1932, this great lady started her career in 1955, when she was entrusted with the family business by her father, Henri Leroy (1894-1980), who was also the co-owner of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Lalou was 23 years old when she discovered the wine business and, thanks to her patience and perseverance, she managed to make a name for herself, in a world which was mainly dominated by men at the time.
Over the years, she adopted a philosophy that would guide her steps during her entire life: nature has to be preserved, no matter what. This explains why she opted for biodynamics, the ancestor of our modern organic farming. She worked tirelessly, creating her own natural fertilizers, choosing not to use the herbicides or pesticides many other wine makers were so fond of, dedicating all her time and love to her vineyards...
Lalou's other belief is limited output. According to her, wine is sending us a "loud and clear message of life", which encourages her to never make more than 15 hectoliters per hectare of vineyard, and to pick all grapes by hand only. In total, 8000 bottles are produced per year (only a fraction of them are actually being sold), resulting in wines that are truly the stuff of legend, but whose prices can quite often skyrocket.
