The artisans of champagne
Nowadays managed by Jerôme Dehours, the young family champagne house located on the commune of Cerseuil has been the home of four generations of winemakers. Jérôme's grandfather, Ludovic Dehours, founded the estate in 1930. He was actually pretty ahead of his time, as he was one of the first champagne winemakers to bottle his own harvest. Likewise, his father (Robert Dehours) was a pioneer when it came to reserve wines. In 1996, after his father died, Jérôme succeeded in buying back the family house, which was coveted by many people at the time. In order to finance the purchase, he was forced to sell a big part of his harvest to local wine merchants.
Jérôme Dehours is a strong believer in reasoned agriculture, which he practices on his 60% Pinot Meunier vineyard, scattered on various soils (there are 42 different parcels, on 14 hectares of land). A life-size jigsaw puzzle, not unlike the Champagne region itself. This talented wine artisan produces some high-quality single vineyard cuvées, like Maisoncelle, Brisefer, Les Genevraux, La Croix Joly… All his wines have very little sugar but a strong personality. Just like his father, Jérôme also has an important stock of older wines (from 1998 onwards); he uses it for solera cuvées (perpetual reserve), a Spanish technique of wine blending. The House Dehours received the HVE3 certification ("High Environmental Value" in English) a few years ago.
