Famous Beaune wine estate
The Drouhin family has been working in the vineyard for more than 130 years. In 1880, Joseph Drouhin founded his very first wine trading house in Beaune. A few years later, his son Maurice turned this little business into a bonafide wine estate, with the addition of a vineyard next to the main building. Then, in 1957, Joseph’s grandson Robert bought many more grapevines as well as a fully equipped oenological laboratory. Managed by Laurence Jobard, the first woman oenologist in Burgundy, this lab allowed them to experiment a lot (turning the estate into one of the first to adopt reasoned viticulture, for example).
Thanks to his research, Robert laid the first brick of what would ultimately become the philosophy of the Domaine Drouhin. Since 1990, the estate has gone full biodynamics and the motto now is to solve natural problems using natural solutions. Plowing is done using a horse, fertilizers are completely natural, yields are voluntarily low, grapevines are respected, harvesting is done by hand… Everything here revolves around the well-being of the vineyard, which of course shows in the final products.
The Drouhin style gives birth to wines that are a balanced combination of harmony, smoothness and strength. The estate’s pursuit of excellence leaves nobody indifferent. Today, the Domaine Joseph Drouhin owns 73 hectares of vineyard, located in the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Chablisien. It is one of the biggest estates in Burgundy, producing more than 90 different appellations (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir), with many of them being premiers crus or even grands crus.
