Family vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny
As a former professional cyclist, Jules Groffier was very familiar with France. During the 1950s, he decided to dedicate his life to his other passion: winemaking. He left his bike to go work on his family's Burgundian estate, founded by his father Frédéric in the little village of Morey-Saint-Denis. There, he would take care of vines planted during the 1930s, until his death in 1974. After his passing, his son Robert took the helm of the estate.
Robert Groffier has a deep respect for the terroir and the family traditions. He takes extremely good care of the 8 hectares of vineyard he inherited, growing in Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny (this latter parcel produces the famous First Growth "Les Amoureuses"). His life ambition? To create the kinds of wines that can really express the power of the grapes, instead of the effect of the winemaking process itself.
In 2005, Robert left the reins of the family estate to his son Nicolas. He represents the fourth generation of Groffier, as attached to nature and family values as his ancestors. Together, father and son are now among the very best winemakers of the Côte de Nuits, thanks to their fine and smooth wines. Acclaimed by connoisseurs, their wines can age gracefully and will reveal themselves after a dozen years of cellaring.
