Tasting notes for the Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 - Domaine Buisson-Charles

  • EYE: The Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 presents itself in the glass with an exceptionally deep robe, an intense ruby red, announcing the concentration and power that characterize this grand cru.
  • NOSE: The nose reveals a complex and captivating bouquet. Aromas of juicy black cherries mingle with notes of wild blackberries, while subtle floral nuances bring additional elegance. Sweet spices and a light touch of woodiness testify to the perfect marriage between the vigor of the fruit and aging in oak barrels.
  • MOUTH: In the mouth, the wine unveils all its greatness. Black fruits, blackcurrants, and cherries explode into a symphony of flavors, supported by powerful yet silky tannins. Delicate minerality and spicy touches persist, adding an extra dimension to this memorable tasting experience.

In short: The Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 from the Domaine Buisson-Charles has impressed us with its deep robe and complex nose, where the generosity of black fruits harmonizes with floral and spicy nuances. In the mouth, this wine demonstrates controlled power and persistent elegance. At its peak in the next 10 to 15 years, it promises a rewarding evolution. If you're looking to pair this grand cru, consider a coq au vin, a grilled ribeye with herbs of Provence, or even just a few squares of rich, dark cocoa chocolate.

A big little estate in Meursault

The Domaine Buisson-Charles, created in Burgundy by Michel Buisson and his wife during the 1960s, is nowadays managed by another couple: the winemaker Catherine Buisson, Michel's daughter, and her husband Patrick Essa (an engineer and trained oenologist). A family tradition which is not stopping anytime soon, since their son, Louis Essa, took the helm in 2020.

It's near the village of Meursault (on the Côte de Beaune) that you'll find the estate's vineyard. 6,3 hectares in total, just enough to make sure the terroir stays human-scaled. The Domaine Buisson-Charles produces 26 different cuvées, like the Volnay or the Chassagne-Montrachet for example. Yields are intentionally low, especially since the grapevines are quite old (90 years, for some of them).

What the estate really wants is for its wines (reds and whites alike) to stand the test of time. That's why the Buisson-Charles family has decided to not only use a horse for plowing, but also to reject any sort of chemical herbicide (they are currently going through the process of the French "Bio" certification). An honest and respectful approach to nature and the terroir.
