Tasting notes for the Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2020 - Robert Groffier

  • EYE: The robe of this wine is a deep ruby red with garnet reflections. It is clear and brilliant.
  • NOSE: Complex and elegant, with intense aromas of red fruits (such as cherry or raspberry) and black fruits (notably blackcurrant and blackberry). Spicy and woody notes are also perceptible, accompanied by a slight floral touch.
  • MOUTH: A generous, structured wine with fine and silky tannins. The aromas of red and black fruits are confirmed, complemented by notes of licorice and vanilla. The finish is long and persistent.

In short: The Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2020 from the Robert Groffier estate is an elegant and complex red Burgundy made from the Pinot Noir grape. Its robe is a deep ruby red, and the nose is both complex and elegant, with red and black fruits, as well as spicy and woody notes. On the palate, this wine is rich and structured, with fine and silky tannins. It can be cellared for 10 to 15 years. For pairing ideas, note that this wine goes perfectly with red meat dishes such as beef fillet, duck breast, or lamb leg. It can also be served with game dishes, such as hare stew or wild boar ragout.

Family vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny

As a former professional cyclist, Jules Groffier was very familiar with France. During the 1950s, he decided to dedicate his life to his other passion: winemaking. He left his bike to go work on his family's Burgundian estate, founded by his father Frédéric in the little village of Morey-Saint-Denis. There, he would take care of vines planted during the 1930s, until his death in 1974. After his passing, his son Robert took the helm of the estate.

Robert Groffier has a deep respect for the terroir and the family traditions. He takes extremely good care of the 8 hectares of vineyard he inherited, growing in Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny (this latter parcel produces the famous First Growth "Les Amoureuses"). His life ambition? To create the kinds of wines that can really express the power of the grapes, instead of the effect of the winemaking process itself.

In 2005, Robert left the reins of the family estate to his son Nicolas. He represents the fourth generation of Groffier, as attached to nature and family values as his ancestors. Together, father and son are now among the very best winemakers of the Côte de Nuits, thanks to their fine and smooth wines. Acclaimed by connoisseurs, their wines can age gracefully and will reveal themselves after a dozen years of cellaring.
