Château Cos d'Estournel

The Château Cos d'Estournel is basically the work of a single man: Louis Joseph Gaspard Lacoste de Maniban, Marquis d'Estournel, who inherited the Burgundian family estate when his father died, in 1791. Inspired by the Château Lafite-Rothschild, located in the neighboring commune of Pauillac, he discovers his raison d'être and, in 1811 decides to become a winemaker.

Progressively, he buys and cultivates some parcels of vineyard. As a great admirer of India and the Orient, Louis also builds the famous Chinese pagodas, which sit on top of the Château (hence the name "Pagodes de Cos"). In 1852, in this locality of "Cos" (or "hill of pebbles" in Gascon dialect), he was at the helm of 3 production sites: Cos d’Estournel, Cos Labory and Château Pomys.

Thanks to his hard work, the Cos d'Estournel entered the 1855 Classification as a 2nd Great Growth in 1855. A posthumous victory, since the Marquis died two years earlier. Today, the Saint-Estèphe estate and its 91 hectares of vineyard (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) are managed by Jean-Guillaume Prats, a descendant of Fernand Ginestet (who bought the property in 1917).
