Organic Wine from Fixin
The Berthaut Estate has been a family-owned winery for at least seven generations, dating back to the late 18th century. It all began when François Berthaut's father started cultivating a few hectares of vineyards in Fixin, Burgundy. Over time, the responsibility was passed down to Firmin and Bernard Berthaut until Guy Berthaut took the helm of the estate in 1930.
Under Guy's leadership, the family domain experienced significant growth after World War II, transitioning from bulk sales to bottling and direct sales at the estate. Guy also expanded the property by acquiring a house at 18 Rue Noisot and leasing additional vineyard plots in Gevrey-Chambertin (on the famous French Côte de Nuits), which added the Gevrey-Chambertin village and Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru appellations to the estate's wine selection.
In 1974, Guy Berthaut's sons, Vincent and Denis, took over and continued to expand the domain by purchasing vineyards in the Fixin village and Fixin Premier Cru appellations. In 2005, the Berthaut family inaugurated a new wine cellar dedicated to aging their wines, located on the Route des Grands Crus. In 2013, Amélie, the daughter of Denis Berthaut and Françoise Gerbet, joined the family operation after studying agronomy and oenology in Bordeaux. This marked the creation of the Berthaut-Gerbet estate, bringing together the vineyards of Domaine Berthaut and a portion of the Gerbet estate's vineyards. Amélie works in collaboration with her husband Nicolas Faure, who gained experience at renowned estates such as Jean-Louis Chave, Prieuré-Roch, and Romanée-Conti before establishing his own winery in 2011.
The estate currently spans 18 hectares, with a primary focus on Fixin, while also having a presence in prestigious appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, and Flagey-Echezeaux. The production is predominantly centered on red wines, accounting for a significant 90% of wines with Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. The vineyards are cultivated organically, with an environmentally-friendly approach, emphasizing sustainable practices. Furthermore, the wines are vinified and aged using a non-interventionist philosophy, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes and terroir to fully express themselves.
