Tasting notes for the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2018 - Robert Groffier Père & Fils

  • EYE: The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from the Groffier estate reveals itself to us in a deep ruby robe, of remarkable density, already suggesting the concentration of an exceptional Pinot Noir.
  • NOSE: Exquisite aromas emanate from the glass and captivate us from the first moment. Notes of black cherry, blackberry, and violet intermingle, revealing the typical aromatic complexity of a grand cru. Delicate woody nuances and a subtle touch of undergrowth harmoniously complete this bouquet.
  • MOUTH: This wine unveils all its power and elegance. Fine tannins provide a refined structure, while the freshness of red fruits lingers on the palate. Flavors of raspberry, truffle, and a slight spicy undertone succeed one another, creating a balanced gustatory symphony.

In short: The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru embodies the quintessence of Burgundian Pinot Noir. Powerful and delicate at the same time, it delights the senses with its aromatic richness and finesse on the palate, offering an unforgettable experience. This promising young vintage will reach its peak between 10 and 15 years of cellaring. Patience will be rewarded with a harmonious evolution and increased complexity over time. Pair this grand cru wine with a grilled ribeye, coq au vin, a selection of aged cheeses, or wild mushroom risotto. Culinary pairings that will enhance its aromatic palette.

Family vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny

As a former professional cyclist, Jules Groffier was very familiar with France. During the 1950s, he decided to dedicate his life to his other passion: winemaking. He left his bike to go work on his family's Burgundian estate, founded by his father Frédéric in the little village of Morey-Saint-Denis. There, he would take care of vines planted during the 1930s, until his death in 1974. After his passing, his son Robert took the helm of the estate.

Robert Groffier has a deep respect for the terroir and the family traditions. He takes extremely good care of the 8 hectares of vineyard he inherited, growing in Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny (this latter parcel produces the famous First Growth "Les Amoureuses"). His life ambition? To create the kinds of wines that can really express the power of the grapes, instead of the effect of the winemaking process itself.

In 2005, Robert left the reins of the family estate to his son Nicolas. He represents the fourth generation of Groffier, as attached to nature and family values as his ancestors. Together, father and son are now among the very best winemakers of the Côte de Nuits, thanks to their fine and smooth wines. Acclaimed by connoisseurs, their wines can age gracefully and will reveal themselves after a dozen years of cellaring.
