Pouilly-Loché
Discover the Pouilly-Loché appellation
The production area of Pouilly-Loché is located in the municipality of Loché, in Saône-et-Loire (in the wine region of Burgundy), and covers approximately 32 hectares. The Pouilly-Loché appellation is produced in the Mâconnais vineyard and has been classified as an AOC since April 27, 1940.
The viticultural history of the region dates back to the Gallo-Roman era, when the Roman Emperor Probus allowed the indigenous people to produce wine again. However, Pouilly-Loché is particularly known for its vineyards since the early Middle Ages. In the 6th century, the monks of the Cluny Abbey played a crucial role in the development of the vineyard, as they were the ones who planted and maintained it back then.
The vineyard of Pouilly-Loché is located on the slopes overlooking the Saône Valley. The grapevines are planted in soils rich in clay, limestone, sandstone, schist, and marl. This perfect blend of stones helps retain the heat of the day. The climate of Pouilly-Loché is temperate, of a continental type, which means hot summers and cold winters. The region also benefits from the regulating influence of the Côte Chalonnaise vineyard. These various factors contribute to producing wines that can offer finesse and elegance.
The Pouilly-Loché appellation, like its two counterparts Pouilly-Fuissé and Pouilly-Vinzelles, exclusively produces white wines, mainly from the renowned Chardonnay grape variety. Pouilly-Loché wines are distinguished by their freshness, minerality, and aromatic finesse in their youth. The permitted yields in the Pouilly-Loché appellation are regulated, with official limits set by the AOC guidelines. These restrictions help maintain a high degree of quality in the wines produced.
